S. Anne’s Altar
The mosaics depict the presentation of our Lady in the Temple. The apse is covered with rich Italian rosso, the brightest of the many marbles in the church. The altarpiece, in tempera, shows S. Anne and our Lady as a child and is the work of the Benedictine nuns at Talacre. The altar itself, which is of the Renaissance period, came from the chapel of Cardinal Macchi, Maestro di Camara to Pope Leo XIII, who showed great kindness to Newman on the occasion of his Cardinalate in 1879.
